Have you shopped for a toothpaste lately?

Posted 08/27/18

Just yesterday a sales rep from major company stopped by to detail us about their toothpaste products. There are so many choices that the reps only carry samples on about a doz. each visit. This is just one company with dozens of toothpaste choices! (I noted two products with different names which have exactly the SAME formula. The difference is the MARKETING. They were trying to capture different target audiences with the same formula. Wonder why you are bewildered?)

How to choose the right toothpaste for you? For most individuals you won’t go wrong if you select a toothpaste with the ADA seal of approval.

If a product has the ADA seal, it means that it has been tested and proven to be safe and effective. According to the ADA, only toothpastes containing fluoride will have such a label, and only after providing scientific evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy of the product. As well as containing fluoride, ADA-accepted toothpastes must also not contain flavorings that would cause tooth decay such as sugar, and they must contain active ingredients that assist in teeth whitening, lessen tooth sensitivity, prevent enamel erosion, and reduce gingivitis and buildup of tartar.” If you have no ”special needs”, once you verify the ADA seal, the decision is primarily taste and texture (gel or paste), and cost. Don’t be fooled, all toothpastes with the ADA seal fight cavities, gingivitis and gum disease!

If you suffer from frequent apthous ulcers, choose a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl sulfate, the ingredient which makes the toothpaste foam. If you are allergic to fluoride or mint, the hunt for the best toothpaste becomes more challenging. Also, patients undergoing chemotherapy, have burning mouth syndrome, or one of the many autoimmune diseases will need guidance in toothpaste selection.

At the Practice of Dr.Anna C. Giacalone, our Registered Dental Hygienists are very knowledgeable about dental products and will guide you in your selection.

Diabetics should make their dentist part of their medical team to help control blood sugar and maximize quality of life.
