Cosmetic Dentures:
A Second Chance at a Beautiful Smile
YOU WON’T SEE “DENTURES” linked to the word “cosmetic” very often, however, we give the same artful consideration to denture design as we do to cosmetic procedures for natural teeth.
Dentures need to harmonize with facial features and complexion. A very important factor is proper lip and cheek support. The dentist plumps out the “gum” portion of the denture controlling the lip and cheek drape. Fine wrinkles often disappear or are minimized when this is done well. The midline, where the two front teeth meet, must be in line with the midline of other facial features such as the nose, eyes and chin. We record the height the lip reaches in a broad smile to ensure that teeth and not gums are displayed. The size, shape and color of the teeth selected are equally important. We often look at old photos showing the patient’s smile with their natural teeth as a guideline. Hair color, face shape, complexion, age, and patient preference all come into play.
There are many types of materials and manufacturers of teeth and the plastic used for the denture base today. We carefully select the best product for the individual. No matter which product is used the denture is ultimately fabricated in a dental laboratory. In my office we have a close working relationship with laboratories owned and operated by master technicians. The work is done in the USA where quality and cleanliness can be guaranteed.
No matter how cosmetically pleasing a denture it will not be a confidence builder unless it is secure. An intimate fit of the denture to the underlying gums creates a “suction” fit. The suction fit works well in the upper
arch for patients when no natural teeth remain. In the lower arch
the U- shaped denture base has less suction potential and the less than optimal suction seal is often disturbed by movement of the tongue. For these reasons we recommend implants to help retain the lower denture whenever possible. The implants act like “snaps” to secure the denture to the jaw. Implant placement may sound scary but it is a very predictable and comfortable procedure. Many patients tell us it was the best investment they ever made. We offer several implant retained options including mini – implants.
